The 2019 bushfire season was the worst on record. Sydney was choked with smoke, people wanted to help but didn’t know how. We created a focal point for public attention, a one-off activation – the Burnt Christmas Tree – made entirely of materials from bushfire-affected regions of New South Wales and crafted by James Dive; the same artist behind the iconic tree erected in Martin Place annually. The tree was decorated with burnt-out objects like a metal farm gate and bicycle that acknowledged the human cost of the fires.
